The CDC had no other explanation than a “terrorist attack that will wreck havoc on humanity.” The government was overrun, leaving the country to fend for themselves. Zombies have overrun many major cities, along with many towns close by. There is no sign of hope, other than the fact that no one wants to be eaten alive.  The group of gleeks plus the adults are forced to take over WMHS, and hide out until the apocalypse comes to an end; if it ever does.
